Mentors: Victoria Hunt and Frances Barrett

In 2020 Virginia Barratt, Jessie Boylan and Linda Dement were planning to undertake a residency in partnership with the Australian Dance Theatre, to further develop performance aspects of RUPTURE, an ongoing work in development since 2018.  This period of development was to be undertaken over a 3 week period with dramaturgy and vocal mentor Frances Barrett and movement mentor Victoria Hunt. A one night performance was planned at ADT as the culmination of the residency.

Given the global conditions of 2020, this was canceled and a hopeful alternative plan was hatched, which involved an on-the-road residency from Adelaide to Broken Hill to Bundanon, where the Sydney-based mentors and collaborating artist Linda Dement could meet Virginia and Jessie, who drove across from Adelaide. Virginia and Jessie spent time in Broken Hill gathering resources for sound and video experiments for the development.

While there they met and had productive meeting about future projects with Sue Thomas from the Broken Hill Art Exchange, and John Fadden from the Albert Kersten Museum, as well as spending time with local miners at the Daydream Mine and Broken Hill residents. This was a very productive period of development and we hope to be back in Broken Hill in the future. It’s a great site for working with Rupture’s core concept of geotrauma.

The entire group met together at Bundanon and worked for 4 days together before border closures cut short the residency. The group worked intensively over the period with voice, movement and sound experiments, building a system and structure for a durational performance and installation, to happen over 8 or more hours with intermittent performance interventions, or “ruptures”.  The work will exist on its own as an installation and as a performance. The group has begun discussions with Adelaide-based lighting designer Margie Medlin towards the realisation of the final work.

Given the conditions of 2020, our performance venue at ADT became unavailable, and we are seeking an alternative performance space in Adelaide.

Details: Dramaturgy, vocal and choreographic development of durational immersive installation and performance work with multi-channel video and surround sound.
